Traveling | My First Love

April 10, 2019

Before my heart made room for "smelly boys"; as we referred to them when we were little; I already had a deep love living there. A love that to this day holds it's own special place in my heart. I have loved traveling since as long as I can remember.

Growing up summers = vacations. Every year we went on our annual vacation and then typically visited a new spot. That is where the love affair began. During the summer a group I like to call "The Five Families" would pile into vehicles and head out on our annual summer trip. This consisted hitting our favorite Texas summer spots in one long epic trip. Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, Six flag Fiesta Texas, and lastly one I hate to name....Sea-World. (I do not support Sea-World nor do I recommend or condone anyone going there for reasons we shall talk about in detail later) The new spots consisted of places like the natural bridge caverns, camping all types of ways (woods, beach, parks etc), Zoos, Enchanted Rock, Lakes, Theme parks, Waterparks, Museums, and all kinds of new places.

"The Five Families"; though that name sounds sort of mafia-ish; consisted of 5 regular shmegular middle class families. The group had 5 moms, 5 dads, 4 daughters and 4 sons. Most vacations we had a few tag alongs; a friend or cousin here or there but the old faithful regulars from "The Five Families" vacationed strong together for well over a decade. Piling into mini vans and suvs, playing games, listening to music, and munching on snacks with the friends we didn't see all of the time alone was like a little mini vacation before we even arrived to the destination. None of us went to the same schools so seeing each other for that extended amount of time was exciting for all of us.

I can remember year after year getting a new bikini, my hair braided, and maybe a new pair of sandals or summer outfits that I couldn't wait to pack and show off on vacation. Now if you know me you know this right here is a already enough to make me love traveling. I probably love shopping just as much; if not more than I love traveling. So for me vacation always meant new stuff and a fresh hairdo. To this day I typically do the same thing for vacation.

Another thing I associate traveling with is trying new things. I have not always been the biggest risk taker for much of my life, but vacations meant trying new things and pushing myself to the limit. I guess this was a time of release and breaking out of my shell. It was a time when there were no rules or no worries. I could let my hair down and have unrestricted fun. When "The Five Families" came together it often meant the parents weren't around as much. Now we weren't actually bad kids and honestly if the parents were around for the stuff we did we probably wouldn't get much more than an eye roll from them, but those times were the most fun. I think we felt like little adults. We felt like we were part of our own little rebellious and unsupervised club lol.

Traveling once I've gotten older still means taking risk. The risks just changed a bit. It has turned into learning about other cultures, trying new foods (I was an extremely picky eater growing up), and going on exciting adventures. I have vacationed in 7 countries (many of them multiple times) to date; and have parasailed, snorkeled, kayaked, stand up paddled boarded, partied with locals around the world, swam with whale sharks over 25ft long, held a sting ray, explored caves, seen ancient ruins, sailed, camped, biked, hiked, climbed, zip lined, experienced the most beautiful sun rises and sun sets, bathed on beautiful beaches, go lost and so much more.

Traveling has also been a big part of teaching me who I am. This is probably the biggest reason I fall in love with traveling over and over again. I think once you are out of your comfort zone and away from familiar places with familiar faces you learn a lot about yourself. I encourage everyone to travel for this reason. Of course the memories you will have forever and the new experiences are great but learning more about your self is invaluable. This can be domestic or international travel. Of course traveling to new countries, with different customs and languages will push you even more but even when traveling domestically you learn so much about who you are. The point is just getting into new environments.

I could go on and on about why I love traveling but to be honest the best thing I can say is stay tuned. There is so much more coming in the area of traveling. I will revisit some of my favorite vacations as well as tell you all about the ones I take in the future. This love affair with traveling has been going on for a while now and I don't think it will end anytime soon.

Stay tuned!
